What is photodynamic therapy?

This treatment uses a combination of photosensitizing drugs and a light source. How is photodynamic therapy performed?

When used for acne treatment, the drugs are applied topically to the skin. This is left in place for a period of time to allow the medication to work. After that time, a light wand is run over the top of the area. This usually takes less than ten minutes, after which time the face will be cleansed, and the patient can return home.

Topical-5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) or methylaminolevulinate (MAL) is applied to the lesions at the dermatologist's office. As soon as an hour later or overnight, those medicated areas can be activated by a strong blue or red light. This light selectively destroys Actinic Keratosis while causing minimal damage to surrounding normal tissue.
